Teacher Appreciation Week

National Teacher Appreciation Week is the first full week in May of each year. This year it begins May 6, 2019 (next week)!

A Little History

Political and educational leaders began discussions for a day to honor teachers in 1944. It took until 1953, when Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teachers’ Day. Today that tradition continues. Congress declared March 7, 1980, as National Teacher Day. The National Education Association continued to observe Teacher Day on the first Tuesday in March until 1985 when the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May. The NEA Representative Assembly then voted to make the Tuesday of that week National Teacher Day.

Even though we are grateful for our teachers EVERY day, Teacher Appreciation Week is a time for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives. We have created fun gift ideas to help celebrate our wonderful APA Teachers! Click HERE to go to the May Calendar for tips.

Thank you!
